FISHING REPORT 02 -09 August 2008 - Week 8

Following on from the success of last week we were expecting great things this week, and we were not to be disappointed. We only had six fishers this week, which was a pity as the river seemed full of fish and all the beats were producing. In the end we were able to divide the river into six beats and everyone fished a different piece of water everyday.

Without doubt the achievement of this week and probably this season was the week that Dr. Martin Wright had. Although recovering from some health problems and unable to wade or fish in the evening, Martin landed three salmon over thirty pounds during the week, including two on one day. The largest of these fish was weighted at 34lbs, a fish of a lifetime in itself, even without the other two. Martin also managed to catch plenty of other fish, including one over twenty pounds. Also due a mention was his fishing partner, Ken Darby, who had never caught a salmon before or fished with a double handed rod. Ken not only managed to catch his first salmon, but caught several in the high teens and into the twenties!

Overall the fishing was good for everyone, with 158 fish landed by 6 rods, and average of about 26 fish each. We were surprised by the number of fresh fish landed, with many sea liced grilse and a lot of bigger fish that had only been in the river for a week or so. Sadly this was the last week we fished this season, with things looking so good next week should be outstanding as well. The weather has made it difficult this season, but the conditions have seemed to come right from mid to late July onwards, with the river dropping a bit and the air temperature not staying hot for too long. A very good end to the season.

FISHING REPORT ARCHIVE
  FISHING THE YOKANGA   Roddy
For those of us lucky enough to fish regularly in Russia our expectations change and our goals are modified over the seasons. People who come over after a few lean years on European or Canadian rivers may at first be very content to know that, more often than not, their fly is fishing over salmon. Catching fish on a regular basis is no longer an unrealistic dream; losing a fish is not a catastrophe.  We set ourselves new challenges, whether it is to learn the art of spey casting, or to wade down a boulder-strewn stretch of fast water that would have terrified our old selves...
